A Beta version of the Federal Learning eXchange (FLX), a one-stop resource for training opportunities for the Federal government, will be operational and available for use soon.

In January 1999, President Clinton signed Executive Order 13111 (EO) and thereby launched an initiative to promote the use of technology that makes lifelong learning more affordable, accessible and tailored to the needs of the Federal worker. The EO seeks leadership from Federal government agencies to ensure that Federal workers are trained to take full advantage of these technological advances and to acquire the skills and learning needed to succeed in a rapidly changing workplace. The National Economic Council (NEC) and the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) have been working with the President's Task Force on Training Technology (Task Force) to help shape how the Federal government will improve Federal training programs and their accessibility to Federal employees through the effective use of new and emerging technologies.

Based on the Department of Labor's success in building America's Learning eXchange (www.alx.org), the EO directed the Department, in collaboration with the Task Force and Federal training staff members, to build a comprehensive database of training resources to facilitate access to Federal training. A Beta version of the Federal Learning eXchange (FLX), a one-stop resource for training opportunities for the Federal government, soon will be operational and available for use. FLX (www.flx.gov) is the online technology tool that will help Federal agencies and their employees open the doors to lifelong learning.

Through FLX duplication and the high costs of developing and delivering training will be reduced by promoting greater collaboration between Federal agencies and their training partners. At the same time, FLX will take advantage of advanced information technology that provides the means to train and reach more people quickly and effectively at a lower cost.

FLX Marketplace (www.flx.gov/marketplace) is now ready for use. The "Marketplace" will allow Federal workers access to vendor products available for a "Test Drive" and to subscribe to the FLXNEWS service. Once Federally approved vendor providers and Agency providers are registered and validated, they will have access to the FLX "Collaboration" page. These registered providers and all ALX registered providers will be able to search for training partners, advertise course vacancies, or find others interested in co-development of Federal training.

All Federal agencies will soon be posting training courses, information and other learning opportunities on this site. The FLX team will be happy to provide you with information or assistance. Please log on to www.flx.gov, email moreinfo@flx.gov or call 202-219-6075 ext. 172.

All FLX users will be have access to value-added services to search for course vacancies and training resources.
